Camping @ Rocky Mountain National Park – June 2013

Full Photo Album

We had reserved a walk-site at RMNP many months ago, to make sure we had the best spot. And it did not disappoint! It was beautiful, right next to a creek, and very isolated from other campers, even though it was still just a short walk to the bathroom.

Brian took off on a long solo hike, and Lily was doing her own guided hike with a ranger, so Owen and I went to the visitor center and watched a puppet show. It was about the trouble they were having in the park with the Elk eating the Aspen trees.

We also did a family hike in Wild Basin to a waterfall, and drove along Trail Ridge road. It was cold and windy though! And we went to an evening ranger program at our campsite, the first time we’ve made it one of those.

Lily really enjoyed a stop at “Lily Lake”, and thought it was cool that it was named after her.

All through the trip Owen loved bouldering on the big rocks, and Lily really had fun taking lots of pictures with her camera.

We ended the trip by stopping at Grand Lake, the farthest west we’ve ever gone into the park. We played on the beach for a little while before a storm chased us out.

Albuquerque Swim Meet – June 2013

We made a quick weekend trip to Albuquerque for Lily’s swim meet.

We had a bit of drama when we first arrived as the hotel had seemingly lost our reservation, but we were able to find something else nearby. The only free time we had was Saturday afternoon, and we chose to spend it at the science museum. They also had a traveling Titanic exhibit that Lily really enjoyed.

Florida – Mothers Day 2013

Florida – Mother’s Day 2013

We made a quick trip down to Naples to see Jaime’s family for Mother’s Day. We had only been back from Disney World for a few weeks, but we hadn’t had time on that trip to visit, so here we were.

Nothing too exciting, just handing out with Grandma and Grandpa and a short trip to the beach, where we saw a very unusual sand formation, and the kids got to watch Dolphins jumping in the waves.

Funny FB post on the way home:
Left the airport for a little while since we have a very long layover, coming back through security Owen got stubborn and refused to stay with me. I had to drag him forcibly up to the counter, causing some concern for the security agent. Further suspicious was that he then refused to tell her his name or age. So she tried to talk to Lily instead, who suddenly had one of her “timid attacks”, and wouldn’t answer anything without nervously looking at me first. (Hard questions like, What’s your name, and where are you going?) She finally let us go, but I’m pretty sure she thought I was kidnapping both of them.

Prologue
So as you may have noticed, we have a tradition of taking one “BIG” vacation every year, in addition to our many smaller trips. We take turns picking the destination for this, though we’ve tended to rotate between beach, national parks, and Disney World. (Stay tuned for something very different next year though!) This year it was time to head back to Florida to see the Mouse!!

This would be our 3rd Disney World Vacation as a family, though we’ve snuck in a few mini-trips on visits to my family as well. And it would be Owen’s very first Disney World trip!

There was much debate and decision-making on when to go and where to stay, but we finally settled on late-April (hoping for warm but dry weather, and lower crowds than we were used to in the summer), and staying at the Yacht Club (thinking it would be convenient to be close to Epcot, and that the kids would love the Stormalong-the-Bay pool)

Much research and planning began, and slowly the countdown of months creeped into weeks, and then finally days. It was almost time to go to Disney World!!!

Chapter 1. A Busy Day to Get Ready to Leave

Friday was a hectic day. A school we are considering for Lily (for next year) was having an open house, and we ended up spending about an hour there before taking Brian to work, and we had to drop Nala off at the groomer too. And then there was last minute shopping and errands to do, packing, all the usual. Then we picked Nala up from the groomer, took her to her cousins house (where she would stay for the next few days), and picked up Brian’s mom who was coming with us. One more stop to pick up Brian from work, and we were on our way!

Florida / Legoland – Christmas 2012

Chapter 1. Every Trip has to Start with this part…

Saturday 12/22/12, 3am. Dum Dum Da Dum Dum BEEP BEEP BEEEEEP… As I always say, the first sound of every vacation is an insanely early alarm clock. (And I actually set two different ones, just in case.) We were flying out of Denver at 7am, and with over an hours’ drive to the airport, plus the usual holiday lines at check-in and security awaiting us, there was no choice but to get up and out.

Yearly Letter – 2012

Delaney Family Yearly Update Letter – 2012

Dear Family & Friends,

We hope that 2013 is treating you well so far. As we reflect back on 2012, it has admittedly been a challenging year for us. It seems to have dealt more than its fair share of grief and stress, but there have certainly been many wonderful times too. And perhaps the hard times have reminded us more than ever to not take a single blessing for granted, and to make every moment count.

Chapter 1. Swim Fast, then Hit the Road!

An early start to the day, as usual when some sort of travel is involved! But today we had another reason to be up early anyway. Lily had a swim meet at Gleneagle! I had initially been planning to hit the road to Moab first thing, but when we found out that the swim meet was scheduled for that morning, I figured we would just leave straight from the pool and accepted the obvious fact that we would be getting into Moab pretty late. She was excited to swim in the first in-house meet though so it would be worth it.

Warrior Dash – August 2012

Chapter 1 – A Fun Day in the Mountains.

Last year, Brian competed for the first time in the Warrior Dash- a 3-mile adventure race at Copper Mountain ski resort, that includes obstacles, jumping over fire, climbing through mud pits, just to name a few. We made a long weekend of it, and had a great time. I decided to take the plunge, and do it this year as well! Copper is also our favorite skiing vacation, so we were happy to get to spend a few days here again in the summer.

Sequoia & Yosemite – May/June 2012

Pre-trip report.

This story actually begins in Montana, in Glacier National Park to be exact, even though it isn’t where we are going. But we went there several years ago, and Brian declared it his favorite place in the world. When he would tell people that, they would always say that he should go to Yosemite, and assured him he would fall even more in love there. He was skeptical, but intrigued, so it became the natural choice for our next National Park vacation.

Chapter 1. Let’s Find Some Magic!!!

As many times as we’ve done this whole flying thing, you’d think we’d be experts at it. At the ripe old age of 18 Months, this will already be Owen’s 5th flying vacation (about 16 take-offs and landings). And Lily ( 8 years old) has done at least 5 or 6 times that many. It’s just the natural result of having family that lives across the country. And liking to travel, I admit.

Estes Park – February 2012

For Christmas, Brian’s parents had given us a snowshoe tour in Estes Park. Obviously we weren’t going to be able to take Owen on the tour, so it made the most sense for them to come up there for the weekend with us, so that they could babysit while we played in the snow 🙂 So we rented a 2 bedroom cabin for the weekend, and hoped for good weather!

Skiing @ Copper – January 2012

It has become our habit to go to Copper Mountain every January for our long-weekend ski vacation. We’ve been to several other ski areas here in Colorado, but we always decide we like Copper better, so we’ve given up on trying a new place every year, and just stick with what works. We get a condo right at the slopes, and love the convenience of being able to walk right out to the lifts in the morning – so beats having to drive in early and get all suited up in the car! I decided not to ski this year actually, but am looking forward to some tubing and snow-shoeing.

Thanksgiving in Florida – 2011

Thanksgiving was in Florida this year, per our designated rotation. Owen was a bit more of a seasoned traveller by now, but not necessarily a better one, ha! But we had some really fun things planned for the week, and were looking forward to catching up with the family and enjoying some sunshine. And of course the turkey. (well for the carnivores of the family, anyway!)
