Skiing – January 2010

After last year’s big trip to Keystone, we thought we should be a little more budget minded this year, and stay somewhere cheaper. So we booked a couple of nights at the Super 8 in Leadville, planning to spend 2 days skiing at Ski Cooper. Definitely a budget trip, but at least we’d have some time on the slopes!

As the trip got closer, I was able to get some discount lift tickets for Copper, so I thought we’d spend one day there, and another at Cooper. (Yes, you’re reading that right – Copper vs. Cooper. Pay attention to the o’s and p’s, lol! Easy to get mixed up.)

Another development as the trip neared…

Yep! Found out I was pregnant two weeks before the trip. (But SHHHH! It’s a secret, we haven’t told anyone yet!) I immediately decided I wasn’t going to ski, and was grateful that when I mentioned that fact, no one seemed to question why. So, it was going to be a long weekend of sitting around inside the ski lodge for me. I really wished that this year, of all years, we were staying slopeside, and I could have relaxed in the condo all day. Oh well.

The first day at Cooper was a bit tedious for sure, there wasn’t really a good place for me to “be” that I wasn’t in  the way. But I managed to get in a little bit of reading, and did some work for school. Brian and Lily had a great time skiing – Lily went to ski school for most of the day, and then skied some more with Brian later on. And of course we met up for lunch.

We had a nice dinner in Leadville, lots of local flavor and a bit of history, even if it showcased the more-unsavory side of the towns past. Back in the room we played some games until time for bed. It was rather cramped quarters, but we made it work.I was continually amazed at how COLD it was here! Maybe it was just the early pregnancy hormones, but I didn’t think I had ever been that cold every time we went outside.

On Sunday, we were off to Copper. At least I knew the lay of the land a little better here. Lily skied with Brian in the morning while I sat inside and tried to get some work done. Was disappointed that they didn’t have wi-fi though, so I wasn’t very productive, and ended up spending far more time texting my sister than working 🙂

After lunch, Lily and I went ice skating and tubing. I figured those were tame enough that I should be okay. I did stick to only the “slow” lanes on tubing, but it was still fun. Then she was ready to ski some more. And skied, and skied and skied, lol! She was finally collapsed into a pathetic heap on the snow (nearly 4pm), moaning that her legs wouldn’t carry her another inch. Until she noticed that the lifts were still running for a few more minutes. Suddenly she was begging her dad to take her up for one more run. Fortunately, our good sense prevailed instead. But she has clearly caught the ski-bug.

Then it was time to make the drive home. It was definitely nice last year being able to stay on-site and go home the next day. Maybe next year, when we, (gasp, gulp… breathe…) have another little one!

I had already bought my lift ticket for Copper when I found out that I would be in “delicate condition”, so Brian used it a few weeks later to take Lily on a day trip skiing while I stayed home.
