Estes Park – February 2012

For Christmas, Brian’s parents had given us a snowshoe tour in Estes Park. Obviously we weren’t going to be able to take Owen on the tour, so it made the most sense for them to come up there for the weekend with us, so that they could babysit while we played in the snow 🙂 So we rented a 2 bedroom cabin for the weekend, and hoped for good weather!

The drive up was, unfortunately, not uneventful. Owen seems to have inherited his dad’s and sister’s tendency toward motion sickness, I’ll just leave it at that. We would have some major carseat cleaning to do at the cabin!

We had a relaxing evening in the cabin, Brian and his dad went to pick up pizza, and bought the movie Short Circuit to watch. Lily loved Johnny-5, and could definitely see the Wall-E resemblance!

We needed to get going pretty early in the morning, so we left Owen with his grandparents, grabbed a quick breakfast at Mickey-Ds (that happens like, once every year or two, we generally avoid the place like the plauge!) and then checked in at the winter-sports shop.

It turned out we had a private tour, so once we were settled with appropriate gear, our guide drove us into Rocky Mountain National Park! There was certainly plenty of snow, but also plenty of wind today too. It wouldn’t have been all that cold otherwise. Oh well. We were pretty bundled so hopefully it would be bearable.

We had a really good time despite the weather, and getting stuck a few times, especially Lily. The guide unfortunately had underestimated the size of snowshoes to bring for her, and she had some trouble with them. He let her wear his for a while, but had to take them back from her a few times when it got treacherous.

We ended up deciding to head back a little early, partly because of the wind, and because Lily was just getting worn out. But we saw some really cool sights and all had a good time. Can’t wait to do this again next year!

Back at the cabin we all relaxed and warmed up for a bit before heading into town. We stopped at the Estes Park brewery for a while – they guys picked out some beer, we had a snack, and Lily got a new sweatshirt.  Then we drove around looking at elk until we were hungry enough for dinner. After our first few ideas didn’t work out, we ended up back at the same steak house we always seem to go to. We were all tired, and mostly just anxious to get fed and to bed!

The next morning, the 4 of us were up and hungry earlier than Brian’s parent’s wanted to get going, so we went towards town on our own and had a nice breakfast. Then we came back to pack up and head on home. A short but fun winter getaway!

Sadly, we had no way of knowing at the time that in just 2 short months, we would lose Brian’s dad following complications from a brain tumor that was found shortly after we got back, so the memories from this trip are extra-special now.
